In November 2022 we (Jennie Walmsley, Louise O'Leary, Sandra Mathers, Kate Eveleigh and Andrew Colleran) conducted a survey of how people in our part of Wallingford get about and how they park their cars. We included some questions about various transport options to improve our environment.
Thanks to everyone who completed the parking survey.
We have been looking at the results and thinking about next steps. There is a clear problem of shortage of parking spaces for residents - we’ve got too many cars for the spaces available. We are in the process of talking to local councils about ways forward. Here’s a brief summary of the key findings:
On St. Leonard’s Lane, Wood Street, Thames Street and Cherwell Close there are 41 car parking spots on the road. There are 19 garages and 18 private drives. For the sake of rounding up there are just under 80 spaces for a car. Based on the survey, most garages cannot or are not used for cars.
There are therefore approximately 60 car parking spaces in the St Leonard’s area.
There are approximately 70 houses/households in St Leonard’s "loop".
Based on the survey responses from 30 respondents the average number of cars per household is 1.3.
The survey identified 60 people in the 30 households, of those adults there were 31 drivers. There were 40 cars.
Extrapolating to the 70 households the likely demand for parking spaces is 91.
The number of additional car parking spaces needed is therefore 31.
